Chantecler Chicken Sales

Due to the rarity of these chickens in western Canada, we get a tremendous number of inquiries into them, so it is important to clarify the following.

First and foremost, this is a rare heritage breed and as such we are doing our best to try to help preserve it. We do at times have a limited number for sale, however we definitely do not sell them exclusively for eating. If it is strictly meat birds that you are looking for, we suggest that you contact the large scale hatcheries to purchase meat birds bred in large numbers for that specific purpose. Also because this is a rare breed, our expectation of those purchasing them from us is that they will act as breed stewards and do their part to help preserve the Chantecler. This means that they will be maintained as a pure bred flock and that they will not be allowed to cross breed with other chickens (or between the white and partridge types).

Being one of the very few breeders in the west of the Chantecler chicken, the past couple of years have found us inundated with requests for our Chanteclers!

In the past, we only sold hatching eggs. However it soon became clear that there would be no way for us to possibly fulfill the number of eggs that had been requested. Also due to the differing conditions under which our eggs were being hatched out by our clients, we found the hatch rates of our sold eggs to be much less than that of our own eggs hatched here.

It also become clear to us that more people prefer chicks than hatching eggs anyhow.

Accordingly we have decided not to sell hatching eggs anymore. Instead, we are concentrating our efforts on hatching out our own eggs, and selling the resulting chicks instead. This way we feel that we can better preserve the breed and at the same time try to ensure that they are made a bit more accessible to others.

Of note is the fact that we only produce a small number of these chicks (both White and Partridge) each year so the numbers are VERY limited! Also, because we only maintain small flocks of each type of Chantecler, we do not have any mature birds for sale.

Our chicks are only sold as "straight run" (eg unsexed). Accordingly, one can expect an approximate ratio of half male and half female chicks. Please note that we do not have the ability to sex chicks here so please do not request "x" number of hens as we simply cannot do this.

It is very important to note that the White and Partridge birds are in essence different breeds. So, in the event that you are contemplating getting both types, we request that they be housed completely separately so that they do not intermix as this will only occur to the detriment of both breeds.

Once chick availability is confirmed with us via email, we request that you complete our Chicken order form.

Please note that at the time of chick reservation, we will require a 50% non-refundable down deposit on the chicks ordered. Unfortunately we have had to implement this, due to numerous last minute cancellations and late pick ups that occurred last year. No chick reservations will be confirmed without payment of this deposit.

Nor do we ship our Chantecler eggs or chicks - for farm pick up only.
